How shoe sizes relate to foot length
Every sizing system starts from the same measurement — the length of your foot from heel to longest toe — and applies a different arithmetic to it. That is why the numbers look unrelated when they are describing the same foot.

The Paris point is two-thirds of a centimetre, so one full EU size is about 6.7 mm of foot. The English systems use a barleycorn, one third of an inch or 8.47 mm. The units do not divide evenly into each other, which is why conversions between EU and UK sizing never land on clean numbers.

Men's and women's sizes are offset, not different
In US sizing, a women's size is 1.5 numbers higher than the men's size for the same foot length — a 26 cm foot is a men's 8.5 and a women's 10. In the UK the two scales are the same numbers, and in the EU there is only one scale for everyone.
Length is not the whole story, though. Women's lasts are typically cut narrower through the heel and higher at the instep, so a men's shoe in the "equivalent" size will often fit loosely even when the length is right.
How to measure your foot properly
- Measure in the evening. Feet swell through the day by up to half a size.
- Stand up with your weight on the foot — a foot measured while seated reads short.
- Wear the socks you would wear with the shoes.
- Trace the outline on paper against a wall, then measure heel to longest toe. The longest toe is not always the big toe.
- Measure both feet and use the larger. Most people have a size difference between them.
Because one EU size is under 7 mm, a 5 mm measuring error is most of a size. Measure twice.
Why the conversion is still only a starting point
There is no enforced international standard for shoe sizing. Manufacturers work from their own lasts, so the same marked size varies by up to a full size between brands, and athletic shoes commonly run smaller than dress shoes from the same maker.
Width matters as much as length. US sizing has letter widths from AA to EEEE, the UK uses F, G, and H fittings, and the EU number system encodes no width at all. If a shoe of the correct length feels tight across the ball of the foot, the answer is a wider fitting rather than a longer shoe.
Treat the converted number as the size to try first, not the size to order without checking the brand's own chart.
