How volume is calculated
Choose a shape and enter its dimensions in meters. The calculator applies the standard solid-geometry formula, shows the result in the volume unit you pick — liters, US gallons, cubic meters, cubic feet — and estimates filled weight from the fill level and density you enter (water, 1,000 kg/m³, by default).
Formulas
Box: V = length × width × height
Cube: V = side³
Cylinder: V = π × radius² × height
Sphere: V = 4/3 × π × radius³
Cone: V = π × radius² × height ÷ 3
Filled volume = total volume × fill level%
Filled weight = filled volume × density
Worked examples
- Box 1.2 × 0.8 × 0.6 m — 0.576 m³ = 576 liters; at 100% fill with water it weighs ≈ 576 kg.
- Cylinder, radius 0.5 m, height 1 m — π × 0.25 ≈ 0.785 m³ ≈ 207 US gallons.
- Sphere, radius 0.5 m — 4/3 × π × 0.125 ≈ 0.524 m³ = 524 liters.
Where filled volume and weight help
- Aquariums and ponds — litres of water, and the load on the floor or stand once filled.
- Tanks and containers — capacity of a cylindrical or rectangular tank at a given fill level.
- Pools — the water volume that sets dosing for chemicals and heating cost.
- Shipping and storage — the space a box occupies, and its weight when packed.
Density changes the weight
Volume and weight are only equal-looking for water, where 1 litre weighs about 1 kg. Other substances differ a lot: petrol is roughly 0.74 kg/litre, milk about 1.03, and honey around 1.42. Set the density field to match what actually fills the shape and the calculator adjusts the filled weight accordingly — useful for fuel, food, or any liquid that is lighter or heavier than water.

How do I calculate the volume of a box?
Multiply length by width by height: V = l × w × h. A 1.2 m × 0.8 m × 0.6 m box holds 0.576 cubic meters, or 576 liters.
How do I calculate the volume of a cylinder?
Square the radius, multiply by π and the height: V = πr²h. A tank with a 0.5 m radius and 1 m height holds π × 0.25 × 1 ≈ 0.785 m³, about 785 liters.
What is the estimated filled weight?
It multiplies the volume by the density you enter (1,000 kg/m³ for water by default). A 0.5 m³ container filled with water weighs about 500 kg.
How many liters are in a US gallon?
One US gallon is exactly 3.785411784 liters. The calculator can show any result in gallons, liters, milliliters, cubic inches, cubic feet, or cubic meters.
