How the tip calculator works
The calculator builds the tip base from your bill plus tax minus any discount, applies the tip percentage, and splits the total evenly between everyone at the table. An optional round-up lifts each person's share to the next whole dollar so nobody fumbles with change.
Base = bill + tax − discount
Tip = base × (tip% ÷ 100)
Per person = (base + tip) ÷ people
Worked example
A $80 dinner with $6 tax and no discount, tipping 18% and splitting between 2 people:
- Base: 80 + 6 = $86
- Tip: 86 × 0.18 = $15.48
- Total: $101.48, or $50.74 per person (rounded up: $51 each).

Two of these you can do in your head. For 20%, move the decimal one place left and double it: on $45
that is $4.50, doubled to $9. For 15%, take 10% and add half of it again. On an iPhone, Spotlight is
faster than any app — typing 45*1.2 gives the total including a 20% tip.
Tipping with tax and a discount
Etiquette guides usually suggest tipping on the pre-tax amount, since tax is not part of the service. This calculator adds tax into the base for a simple all-in split; to tip on the pre-tax figure, leave the tax field empty and add the tax afterwards. Enter tax as the dollar amount on the receipt, not a percentage.
Discounts work the other way: tip on the full pre-discount value. A coupon, comp, or gift card changes what you pay, not how much service you received. If a $100 subtotal has $8 tax and a $10 coupon, the calculator's base is $98; at 18% the tip is $17.64 and the total $115.64, or $28.91 each across four people. Tipping on the pre-coupon $108 instead would add $1.80.
Splitting the bill
An even split divides bill and tip equally, which is convenient but not always fair. If diners ordered very different amounts, assign each person's items first, share the common ones, and apply the same tip percentage to each subtotal.
Watch the wording. Tip per person is only each diner's share of the gratuity; total per person includes bill, tax, and tip. On a $90 base at 18% split three ways, the tip is $16.20, tip per person $5.40, and total per person $35.40 — the larger figure is what each person actually pays.

The prompt on GoFundMe and similar donation platforms is a tip to the platform, not to a person. It funds the site and can be set to zero without affecting the donation.
Service charges and automatic gratuity
A service charge is not a tip. It is restaurant revenue, which may or may not reach staff, and it is often taxable where a voluntary tip is not.
- Automatic gratuity for large parties — usually 18–20%, and no further tip is expected.
- Service charge on the bill — check whether it goes to staff. Often it legally does not have to, and asking is reasonable.
- Both a service charge and a tip line — you are being asked twice. The tip line is optional.
In the UK, an optional 12.5% service charge is standard and can be removed on request. Since October 2024 the law there requires tips and service charges to be passed to staff in full.
Tipping customs outside the US
In the United States and Canada, 15–20% at table service is expected. Across much of Europe service is often included and a small round-up is enough. In Japan tipping can come across as impolite. When travelling, check whether service is already on the bill before adding more — the calculator accepts any percentage, including 0%.
Card or cash
The amount is identical; the timing is not. Card tips usually reach staff on the next payroll run, one to two weeks later, and in some places employers may deduct the 2–3% card processing fee from them. Cash is immediate and untouched, which is the whole reason some servers prefer it.
Tip Calculator — frequently asked questions
How much is a 20% tip on $50?
$10, for a $60 total. The quick method for 20% is to move the decimal point one place left and double it — $50 becomes $5, doubled to $10.
Do you tip on carry-out or carryout pizza?
Nothing is expected, since nobody delivered. Around 10% is common for large or complicated collection orders that took staff real time to assemble.
How much do you tip on catering?
Roughly 10 to 15% of the order for catering delivery, less for pickup. Check the invoice first — catering contracts often include a service charge already.
Should you tip on a gift card?
Yes, and on the full value of the meal before the card was applied. The server delivered the whole service regardless of how the bill was settled.
Do you tip on Fiverr or GoFundMe?
Both are optional and neither is a conventional tip. Fiverr tips are a bonus for work beyond the brief, usually 5 to 15%. The GoFundMe prompt is a contribution to the platform, not to the recipient, and can be set to zero.
How much should I tip?
